PROGESS ISN’T PRETTY

A 2700 year old walled city, Pingyao still has it’s original buildings and narrow streets. It is quaint and charming, yet we wish we had arrived five or more years ago. Since the success of the film Raise the Red Lantern (Oscar for best foreign film 1991) Chinese tourists have been coming to Pingyao. A decade ago there were a few old courtyard houses that had been turned into inns. Now there are dozens with many more being converted. The two main streets are packed with tourist shops selling similar ‘antiques’ and T shirts and art and other items of questionable value (and taste). Continue reading
